HOURS LATER, I LOOKED at my wife. Daphne was too sweet. She was sitting on her bed, hands folded in her lap, and she reminded me of the pure innocence I’d seen in her as a kid. She’d always looked for the best in everyone. Always. And she’d defended me.

There had been times when the other cubs didn’t want to accept me. Tyrone and Cameron especially had ganged up on me and done their best to make my life miserable, or at the very least, annoying. That was one of the reasons I hadn’t ever wanted to draw attention to myself as a child.

In the wolf pack, drawing attention to yourself was just asking for trouble. I didn’t need that. None of us did. What we needed was a safe place where we could feel like we belonged. We needed a place where we could feel like our worlds weren’t going to be put at risk every damn day. We needed safety and peace and acceptance.

We needed each other.

“You seem tired,” I said gently, taking in everything about her. “Tired” was an understatement. She looked like she was about to completely collapse. The meeting had been rough. She’d filled me in on how it had gone. Officially, she was now the owner of Lone Ridge Pack, INC, which was the official name of the Rawr County wolves. She’d take control of the pack from her dad after a ceremony next week, but she wasn’t as excited as I thought she’d be.

“It’s been a rough week,” she whispered, shaking her head. I knew she was nervous and worried. Someone had tried to slip a weird document into the contract that would effectively hand over the pack to her brother. Neither of us wanted that, and I was quite sure that Darrell also didn’t want that. He had his own pack, after all.

“I hope you mean in dealing with your dad and not getting married to me,” I chuckled, sitting down on the bed beside her. She automatically leaned her head on my shoulder. We were very nearly the same height, although if I was being honest, I thought she was just a smidge taller. Still, the fact that she was putting her trust in me to rest against me felt very good, very safe, and very wonderful.

“It’s the contract,” Daphne muttered. “It’s upsetting me. I can’t stop thinking about it.”

“Contract? What about it?” Judging from what she’d said, Cosmo had been very thorough in his explanation of everything there. There hadn’t been anything particularly horrifying within the papers themselves, but signing documents was always a bit emotionally draining in my experience.

“The paperwork I had to sign to take over the pack was worse than I expected,” she explained. I gave her a minute, but when she didn’t keep speaking, I pressed her a little bit.

“What about it?” I had worked with the pack long enough that I understood most of the paperwork she was going to have to fill out, but none of it seemed especially extreme.
